The energy needed to power the turbolaser was massive, so a large reactor core was needed, as well as a large crew to operate. When several SPHA-T walkers worked in unison, the enemy didn't stand a chance. The heavy turbolaser cannon atop the walker could deliver a continuous stream of energy into a target, while the blaster cannons warded off ground troops.
